"Aviation is getting bigger, faster and more modern," says Brian Finnegan, president of the Aviation Maintenance Professionals Association. While major U.S. airlines are struggling, general aviation companies and small jet and airplane makers are looking for new talent to fill aircraft mechanic jobs as the current workforce ages.

"We see a lot of opportunity - it's coming back in bits and pieces," he says. With developments like super-sized and unmanned aircraft on the horizon, the industry is becoming more sophisticated and will need mechanics that can keep up with changing technology.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are currently 154,000 aircraft mechanics working in the United States, and the BLS divides the occupation into four categories:
Look for well-established schools that require at least 1,900 hours of instruction and have a passing rate of 70 percent or higher, says Don Newton, director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA). do Newton recommends studying schools with higher-than-average hourly requirements. "You want to go beyond the basics," he says. "See what kind of hands-on training they offer."
These schools offer students basic basics in the classroom, such as understanding electrical laws and reading blueprints, and working in the lab. "A good school will incorporate new technologies in addition to FAA requirements," says Newton.
All Female Aircraft Repair Team Is Set On Changing The Industry
A high school diploma or equivalent is required to enroll in flight school, but prior experience is not necessary. "I've seen some kids with no mechanical experience do really well," says Bryan Tobias, an FAA designated mechanic examiner.
"If you want to be an airplane mechanic, you can't walk off the street," says Tobias. So as soon as you complete your studies, you should check the certificate. Although testing is not necessarily a job requirement, it is preferred by employers. "A mechanic certificate holder is relatively unrestricted in terms of working on a specific type of aircraft or specialized maintenance functions," he says. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires 18 months of work experience for an aircraft, powerplant or avionics repairman certificate and 30 months for a combined airframe/powerplant certificate.
Completion of a program at an FAA-accredited mechanical school may substitute for work experience. Attending one of America's 200 mechanic schools is the most common way to enter the industry. However, veterans who demonstrate a good work history may test for certification, as may those with adequate practical experience but no training.
Testing consists of a series of computer-based exams followed by a day spent with a certified examiner. The applicant then works on hands-on projects covering 44 topics ranging from small airplanes to Boeing-sized aircraft.

After you get your license, where you work depends on your interests. “In any part of the country and the world, you have major airlines, passenger airlines, engine manufacturers or fixed-base operators,” says Newton. You can work in line maintenance at airports where you look after aircraft at the gate, or you can work on helicopters, as part of a team on a large aircraft or in a shop where you Repair small aircraft yourself. "Right now, I see smaller carriers picking up new people for $14 to $15 an hour," Tobias says.
Wherever you go, don't expect to work a 9 to 5 job. "The work is often outdoors and at night," Finnegan says. "Mechanics are athletes who climb ladders and work in small spaces. You have to be in shape."
