YouGov asks open-ended questions about the topic, allowing respondents to write the name of any country they wish to answer. Some cannot name the country, and some think that the United States has no real foreign enemies, or that international organizations and political parties identify it as the country's greatest enemy.
Republicans (54%) are more likely than Democrats (14%) to view China as a major national enemy, reflecting some of former President Donald Trump's worldviews. For Democrats, Russia is the biggest national threat (40%), something only one in twelve Republicans (8%) believe.
However, when asked specifically about each country, most people on both sides perceive China and Russia as unfriendly - or as enemies. Two in five Democrats (41%) called China "unfriendly" while one in four (23%) described it as an enemy. Three in five Republicans (60%) called China an enemy of the United States, while one in four called it "unfriendly". Democrats are more likely to call Russia unfriendly or hostile than Republicans (81% vs 68%).
The political leaders of countries considered to be the biggest enemies are insulted all over the world. Two-thirds of Americans have a negative opinion of Chinese President Xi Jinping (65%), seven in ten have a positive view of Russia's Vladimir Putin (71%), and even more dislike North Korea's Kim Jong-un (80%).

Democrats are extremely negative about Putin: two-thirds (66%) have an extremely unfavorable opinion of him. Those in each party are equally negative about Kim Jong-un: 84% of Democrats and 86% of Republicans have a negative view of the North Korean leader.
