Members of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323, known as the Death Rattlers, returned to California last week after a 10-month deployment to the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group. It was the final deployment of the F/A-18 Hornet carrier for the Marine Corps, officials said in a news release about the historic mission.

The Hornets have flown more than 35,000 flight hours and 14,000 missions during their deployment. According to the Marine Corps, they fired nearly 250,000 rounds of ammunition while supporting Carrier Wing 17 in the Middle East and Pacific.
Rear Admiral James Kirk, the commander of the Nimitz carrier group, said last week that despite flying the carrier's oldest jet, the Marines "hit the mark," Seapower Magazine reported.
While deployed, VMFA-323 supported missions in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and East Africa. The strike group also operated with other aircraft carriers in the South China Sea.
The squadron has worked alongside the Navy for decades. According to the Marine Corps, it supported the Battle of Okinawa under the command of Admiral Chester Nimitz in 1945, and two years later preparations began for the first of many deck operations.
Of F 18 Hornets Unfit To Fly, Up To 74% In Marines
During the Korean War, the Death Rattlers also supported the Marines at the famous Battle of Chosin Reservoir from the cockpit of the escort ship Badoeng Strait.
The squadron began flying Hernets in the early 1980s and began its first carrier deployment with the aircraft in 1985 aboard the aircraft carrier Coral Sea.
"Nearly 35 years after their first carrier deployment on the Hornet, VMFA-323 made history again by deploying with the [Nimitz Strike Group] as the last legacy Hornet squadron to integrate with an aircraft wing," Marine Corps officials said last week.
The next time the squadron boards a carrier, it will fly the F-35 Lighting II. Marine Corps leaders say the stealth aircraft will give the Marine services an advantage as the Navy and Marine Corps face more sophisticated adversaries.

The jet entered service with Marines in Marine Corps Squadron VMFA-314 at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California in early 1983, replacing the F-4 Phantom.
The aircraft first entered combat in 1986, used to suppress air defense systems in Libya during Operation Prairie Fire, providing cover as U.S. ships conducted freedom of navigation operations near the Libyan coast in response to terrorist attacks in Rome and Vienna, according to an article in the 1986 trial.

The jet was used extensively during the 1991 Gulf War. The jet was adopted for use in missions previously performed by the A-6 Intruder when that aircraft was retired in the 1990s. The horn was again actively used in the war in Iraq.
Marine Corps Concludes Final Carrier Deployment With F/a 18 Hornet
Navy Lt. John Davis, then the deputy commandant for aviation, told the House Armed Services Committee in 2017 that the service was struggling to field the aging Hornets by pushing for a faster fielding of the F-35B, its possible replacement, according to the US Naval Institute.
Plans at the time called for the Corps to continue relying on the Hornet until 2030. But Davis pushed for a faster deployment to end reliance on the Hornet by 2025, save money and improve safety.
Two years before that, in 2015, the three-star congressman reported that one in five Marine Corps aircraft had been grounded for maintenance, with the Hornet the most common on that list. By the end of 2016, that number had doubled to 41 percent of all aircraft marked for maintenance.
Once again, the Hornets were the worst of the bunch. At the end of 2016, only 72 out of 280 hornets could fly.

At the time, the Marine Corps Times reported that the aging Hornets were brought in for depot-level maintenance to extend their service life from 6,000 to 10,000 flight hours. The planes are designed for a lifetime of only 6,000 hours.
In January, VMFA-223, also based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., flew its final Hornet flight. This unit also transfers to the F-35B.
