Dollar stores, one of the success stories since the last recession, are still thriving in the discount market, but lower-priced players want to get in.
Just as the dollar store took off from the five and dollar store 50 years ago, the five dollar store has arrived.
Philadelphia-based Five Below is expanding its U.S. footprint, recently opening in Pleasant, next to an expanding Walmart store at the Wando Crossing mall.
The company, which has more than 500 locations in 32 states and expects 100 more, sells everything for $5 in about 8,000 square feet.

The store at 1483 Hwy 17 offers candy, games, treats, jewelry, T-shirts, phone cases, nail polish and more for toddlers, teens and their parents.
The retailer also opened two other South Carolina stores in the Columbia area. Its annual report for the fiscal year that ended in January said the company's store count could grow to 2,000 over time.
It will open in mid to late June at 385 Meeting St. near Charleston Law School.

The new business offers shaving, haircuts, waxing, hair coloring, beard and neck grooming, facials, shoe shine and men's grooming products.

Buzz Franchise Brands, which operates Mosquito Joe's, is looking to expand into other areas where people can enjoy their backyards.
The company recently launched Pool Scout, a pool maintenance service, and is looking to add locations in the Charleston area. The most recent franchise is in Raleigh.
The Beckett Boutique in downtown Charleston will host a charity fashion show from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Victor Social Club in Hutson Alley. Proceeds from the fashion show will go to MUSC Children's Hospital.
Attendees can enter the event through the High Street entrance at 39 John Street. The event will include live music, snacks and complimentary wine and champagne. There will also be a cash bar.

Located on the corner of Dorchester Road and Riverbluff Parkway, the 22,000-square-foot store offers off-price clothing and home fashions.
It will be the retailer's fourth store in the Charleston area and its 28th in South Carolina. The California-based company has 1,655 locations across the United States.
Construction Set To Begin On New East Side Apartment Building
Other stores in the mall include Five Below, Home Goods, Ulta, PetSmart, Firehouse Accessories, Stella Nails and Buff City Soap. They, and nearby discount grocer Lidl, have yet to announce an opening date.
Ye Ole Fashion Cafe & Ice Cream Parlor plans to open a new retail center in the up-and-coming Point Hope neighbourhood, on Clements Ferry Road.
Rod Lappin, the restaurant's franchise owner, said the building is scheduled to be completed in June 2023, and the restaurant will likely top out within a few months of the site's renovation.
